TOC-V Series

Shimadzu's TOC-V Series will revolutionize the way you think about TOC analyzers. Consisting of seven new Total Organic Carbon/Total Nitrogen (TOC/TN) analyzers, the TOC-V Series delivers:

Sample Oxidation Methods

Combustion Method
Shimadzu was the originator of the catalytically-aided platinum 680°C combustion technique for sample oxidation, which has become the industry standard. The Shimadzu TOC combustion technique was recognized for its ability to analyze samples with particulates, refractory compounds, and high salt matrices in wastewater and other difficult matrices. The pure water market has Shimadzu's TOC combustion analyzer to measure below 1 part per million (ppm), down to 4 part per billion (ppb). Again, this Shimadzu first became the benchmark in the industry. The 4 ppb detection limit easily addresses the 0.500 ppm limit required by the drinking water and pharmaceutical industries.

The new TOC-VC combustion analyzers meet these needs and have a measuring range of 4 ppb to 25,000 ppm.

Wet Chemical Method
In the past, Persulfate-based methods have been known to have incomplete or slow oxidation of particulate samples and refractory compounds. Some manufacturers supply UV-Persulfate TOC analyzers, while others supply Heated-Persulfate systems in order to improve the oxidation efficiency of the persulfate system. Shimadzu is proud to introduce the first Heated-UV-Persulfate system that utilizes three oxidation methods for maximum oxidation efficiency. The TOC-VW is the most powerful wet chemical TOC on the market, capable of measuring down to 0.5 ppb of TOC and up to 3000 ppm.

PC or Standalone TOC-V Analyzers
Many TOC analysts prefer standalone operation of the TOC analyzer, while others prefer personal computer (PC) control. The Shimadzu TOC Visionary Series lets the user the best analyzer for the situation.

Advantages of PC-control include data export to standard Microsoft® programs such as Excel®. Wizard functions ease new users through commonly performed operations of the system and data processing. The PC version is available with the combustion or wet chemical oxidation method by ordering TOC-VCP or TOC-VWP, respectively.

The major advantage of the standalone version is the small footprint, as the TOC-V, the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) monitor, keyboard, and printer are built into the analyzer. This can be a major advantage when lab bench space is at a premium. The standalone version is available with the combustion or wet chemical oxidation method by ordering TOC-VCS or TOC-VWS, respectively. The standalone unit can be upgraded to a PC version.

Normal or High Sensitivity (TOC-VC and TOC-VE)
The TOC-VC combustion systems appear in two configurations, the High (H) Sensitivity and the Normal (N) Sensitivity. The High Sensitivity and Normal Sensitivity have detection limits of 4 ppb and 50 ppb, respectively. The High and Normal Sensitivity TOC analyzers can be ordered as Standalone or PC-based systems. The price-conscious consumer may want to consider the TOC-VE economic unit with manual injection.

Fully Automated, Semi-Automated, or Manual
The majority of TOC analysts require high-throughput automation for increased productivity. The ASI-V autosampler provides the solution. The ASI-V can utilize three different sized sample vials for a variety of applications. The sample trays hold 93 of the 24-mL vials, 68 of the 40-mL vials, or 24 of the 125-mL vials. The ASI-V has septum-piercing capability for increased productivity, as samples can be analyzed in their original vials.

Some manufacturers believe mechanical stirring is best for particulated or fibrous samples. Other manufacturers think bubbling or sparging gives better results. Why take the chance when the ASI-V is the only autosampler in the world with mechanical stirring, sparge mixing, or both simultaneously. Another Shimadzu first!

Shimadzu has the solution for the analyst with too few samples to justify a high-capacity autosampler. Try the inexpensive OCT-1 Octopus autosampler, which accommodates 8 or 16 sample vials. This inexpensive option saves time-consuming manual labor.

Auto-Dilution
Shimadzu's on-board Auto-Diluter allows the user to create a 10-point TOC calibration curve from one standard. The Auto-Diluter will mix a single standard with various volumes of ultrapure water to create the desired calibration standards. The Auto-Diluter can also dilute over-range samples for improved productivity. High-concentration samples can automatically be reduced from 2-50 times in order to reduce matrix problems and maintenance cost.

Accessories
Shimadzu offers a number of high-performance, high-value accessories and autosamplers to meet a range of sampling needs, including:

Nitrogen Analysis (TOC-VC and TOC-VE)
Carbon and nitrogen can now be measured simultaneously with the Total Nitrogen (TN) option. The TN option uses a chemiluminescence detector to measure TN in the range of 50 ppb to 4000 ppm.

Gas Purifying Kit (TOC-VC and TOC-VE)
The optional Gas Purifying Kit eliminates the need for expensive carrier gas purifying units that can cost up to $4000. For most applications, 'house air' from a typical compressor is all that's required. Eliminate moving dangerous gas cylinders around your facility with the Gas Purifying Kit. Cost of operation of the Gas Purifying kit is about $100 over a 2-year period.

Double Sample Throughput (TOC-VC and TOC-VW)
The optional External Sparge Kit permits one sample to be analyzed while simultaneously preparing the next sample for acidify and sparge TOC, also know as Non-Purgeable Organic Carbon (NPOC). Most TOC analyzers require sparging the sample 2-5 minutes depending on Inorganic Carbon (IC) concentration, followed by analysis time of 3-4 minutes. The External Sparge Kit simultaneously analyzes a sample and sparges the following sample resulting in typical analysis times of 3-4 minutes, even with a 3-minute sparge time.

Other Unique Accessories
Other accessories include a solids sample module (SSM-5000A) for soil and sludge analysis. The solids module can measure TC (Total Carbon), IC, and TOC by difference (i.e. TOC = TC- IC). The Gas Sampling Unit has the ability to measure TOC in gas samples, not just liquid samples. The ESU-1 External Scrubbing Unit is able to measure TOC in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Standard particulate size is 0.5 mm with an optional 0.8 mm kit available. An optional POC Kit analyzes Purgeable Organic Carbon in liquid samples.
